When any new technology breaks onto the scene, it presents opportunities for those
savvy enough to be there waiting with the right business model.
The most famous example of this was the ‘dotcom boom’. In this period, the internet
was still relatively new and it was possible to profit hugely by setting up a website
and quickly dominating a niche before anyone else got there.
And it happened again with the emergence of apps. The ‘app goldrush’ was
characterised by people trying to launch apps when there was no competition
available – and at this point almost anything could sell. More than a few millionaires
were made in both cases!
Now it’s happening again with live video streaming. But what is it?
Live video streaming basically refers to apps that allow you to broadcast directly from
your phone camera to the entire world. So you simply take your phone and point the
camera at something of interest and that feed will then be visible to anyone on the
app who wants to watch it.
In this regard it’s quite similar to something like Skype, except that you can have
thousands of strangers all watching your feed and commenting on it at once, rather
than just a few close friends crowded around a computer. One such app is Periscope.
This might sound like nothing special but when you consider the potential uses and
implications, the potential suddenly becomes apparent.

People don’t use Periscope like Skype. This is not primarily used to talk to people but
rather to broadcast and to create content. For example, you can take your camera to
a concert, film it live and then let people all around the world tune in and start
watching. They can then ‘like’ your content or submit comments for you to respond
to – perhaps asking you to point the camera in a certain direction for example.
Other people are using Periscope in order to broadcast shows similar to podcasts or
vlogs – they go on camera and discuss particular topics while responding to people’s
comments. Likewise, it can be used to promote products or events, or to add an
interactive element to a TV show.
Why You Should Care?
So why should you care about all this?
Well, first of all, live streaming very much has the potential to take off and become
the next ‘big thing’. Already, live streaming apps are getting a ton of positive attention
in the media with coverage by publications such as Wired and Forbes. Periscope
already has 10,000,000 users and was purchased by Twitter for $100 million. In the
month it launched it received 60,000 tweets every day and already there is over 40
hours of footage recorded. That’s big.
But what’s more is the way the live streaming can change the way we do things.
Imagine if there were a huge event such as a tornado – and imagine that that event
was broadcast live via a few Periscope accounts. Suddenly, you would be able to ‘be’
right there live and to view the event through the eyes of multiple different people at
ground zero. You could see different angles and get live updates before it hit the
news. Something like this would lead thousands of people to instantly join the
network, so it’s inevitable that this platform will take off.

Likewise, the technology is going to develop with live video streaming and the future
is very bright indeed. Imagine wanting to go out somewhere to eat and being able to
look up feeds from businesses in your area. Right now you can only see static
thumbnails but imagine when data connections allow those thumbnails to be live
previews - at a glance you could see all the different restaurants and the people
eating in them and the atmosphere.
Imagine being able to attend a red carpet event through the eyes of your favorite
celebrity. Imagine being able to submit live questions to them while they talk to you
over their coffee. This is undoubtedly the future.
Right now though, live video streaming is still very young and this is what makes it so
exciting for you as a marketer. If you go onto Periscope now you’ll find there are
anywhere between 100-500 feeds in the US at the moment. A lot of these are super
low quality but the people on there are highly excited by the new technology as early
adopters.
If all you do is film a video of yourself silently eating your morning cereal, you will get
followers. Make any video and you will get followers. Where else can you so easily gain
traction right now?
And one day, those followers will be incredibly valuable when Periscope is as big as
Twitter or even Facebook. Can you see why this is worth your time and effort?
Likewise, even for now, Periscope still gives you access to a huge number of viewers
and lets you interact with them in an entirely new way. You can conduct live AMAs,
you can review products and you can discuss things directly with your audience. This
is an incredible new tool because it gives you two-way communication and lets you
build a far more personal relationship with your fans.

Periscope is not the only live video streaming app in town but it is currently the
biggest and the best.
The next biggest in Meerkat but this lack some of the features that Periscope has
(such as the ability to view videos up to 24 hours old) and doesn’t have as many users.
Another option is Blab. Blab is very exciting but is also very different; this platform is
aimed at enabling discussions between multiple people and allowing new
participants to jump in at any time. Blab is still in Beta though and is less flexible
owing to its focus on discussion.
Another big advantage of Periscope is its very geographical nature – which allows you
to see how many periscopes (the name for feeds) are live in your specific area or any
other part of the world.
When you log into Periscope you will very quickly get an understanding of what it is,
how it works and how paradigm-shifting it really is.
To install Periscope, you simply need to download it from either the Google Play Store
for Android, or the Apple App Store for iOS. From there, you can sign in easily by
creating a new account or by using your Twitter account. This is another advantage
of Periscope – the affiliation with Twitter. It’s recommended that you sign in this way,
as that will allow you to be seen by all the people who already follow you on Twitter
and it will help you to market yourself more later on.

The first thing you’ll see when you get it up and running is a page showing recent
videos from people you’re following on Twitter. That’s not the exciting part though –
click along the next tab up the top on the globe icon and you’ll be taken to a map of
the world where you’ll be able to see all the people currently using Periscope. Simply
look at the titles of the videos and then click on them to start watching.
From here you can then like the video, you can share the feed via Twitter or other
means or you can upload a comment.
What you’ll be struck by at this point is just how voyeuristic it feels and how it really
appears to close distances. As soon as you start watching someone, they’ll see your
name comes up and often they’ll actually welcome you by name. You can ask them a
question and they’ll respond live. It’s very strange and really quite a surreal
experience at first.
If you want to upload your own content, then you simply hit the camera button which
you can find in the bottom right. You’ll then get a few options to choose from – such
as whether you want to make it public or invitation-only and what you want to put
down as a title. You can also choose between the front and rear facing camera, but
you can also do this simply by double tapping the screen during a feed.
I recommend giving this a go and trying filming something early on. It feels daunting
going live on camera but once you try it you’ll see that it’s really not all that scary and
you’ll see first-hand just how easy it is to gather new viewers!

Okay, so now you understand just what it is about live streaming that is so groundbreaking and you know why Periscope is at the forefront of this revolution. Hopefully,
you also understand how to set up a Periscope account and get started!
But now you need to know how to actually succeed on this platform. Of course this
is a completely new frontier so there hasn’t been all that much testing in this area
yet. For now though, there are some basic concepts that you can follow that will help
you to make a strong start and that will take cues from other types of internet
marketing that should be similar.
Deliver Value, Remain Consistent
The first and most important thing is to make sure you are delivering value and
staying consistent.
If you look around Periscope right now, you’ll see that a lot of the content is really
rather dull and consists of people filming themselves doing mundane, routine things
or just talking at the camera.
This is good news for you because it means it will be much easier to stand out with
something that offers value. The best videos on the platform at the moment are
often those that show people working out, that show people cooking or that
otherwise are informative and entertaining in that manner.

This is what you need to try and do. Pick a niche – probably the niche you’re already
using for your website – and then deliver content that is helpful and interesting in
that area.
Another way to do this is by talking on that subject and offering some useful tips and
information. You can’t follow a script for this because you want to be able to respond
to comments and adapt on the fly. What you can do though is to give your talk a
rough structure which will allow you to get back on the right path.
So for instance, a good structure for these types of videos would be a ‘top ten’
countdown. This might be ‘top ten ways to lose weight’ for instance which means you
can speak freely while always having that list to come back and ground you.
Other types of content also lend themselves particularly well to the platform.

You can also add value by making your videos higher quality than what is currently
on there. To do this, you might improve your presentation skills. Speaking a little
more slowly is a great start, as is trying to increase your charisma by using bigger
gestures and gesticulations. Act a bit more enthusiastic than you would in real life
and it will come across as good presenting.

You should also look into other elements. A high quality phone camera will be a good
investment for instance, while at the same time you should also think about your set
layout, the lighting and even the acoustics.
One quick tip is to add your branding to your videos in order to drive more traffic
back to your website – you can do that by printing out tshirts with your logo on for
instance, or even mugs!
In terms of consistency, make sure that you film regularly and that you stay on-topic.
This way, people can learn that they enjoy the kind of content you create and they’ll
know to subscribe if they want more of the same. If your videos are all over the place
then people might stop finding what you upload interesting and therefore
unsubscribe.
Promoting Your Channel
Also important is to promote your channel. Just as you would promote a website or
a social media account, you need to make sure you’re bringing as many eyes as
possible to your Periscope account and there are a few ways you can do this.
One method is to add the ‘live on Periscope’ widget to your website. You can do this
by adding the Twitter Widget plugin to your WordPress site and what that will do is
to show people right on your homepage when you’re live on Periscope.
This has a number of benefits. For starters, it will be intriguing for people who haven’t
heard of Periscope. At the same time, it will bring you more subscribers from people
who are already on the site thus adding another line of communication for you to
reach your audience through. On top of all that, it also has the benefit of making your
brand and your website look very high tech. Periscope is cutting edge and the very

fact that you’re on Periscope will therefore make your site seem more modern and
this will impress potential business partners, subscribers and others!
Another tip is to post to Twitter when you’re live on Periscope. You actually have the
option to do this whenever you go live on Periscope as long as you have synced your
account with your Twitter account. Once again, this means that you can convert the
people who are following you on Twitter to Periscope followers.
Likewise, you can also use the share function on Periscope to share your feed across
other forms of social media like Facebook. The more you do this, the more people
will become to become interested in what this is all about and the more will sign up
to start following you.
You should also make sure to talk about your Periscope elsewhere. In your blog
content for instance you can mention it, while email marketing also provides you with
a particularly good method for reaching your audience and promoting your account.
Email marketing is actually especially good for building anticipation for some kind of
live event – and it also gives you the space to explain to people what live streaming
is and how they can sign up.
Another great feature available on Periscope if you go into settings, is the ability to
automatically save all the videos you record to your phone. The reason this is so
handy, is that it will let you upload them to YouTube as well. If you have a YouTube
audience, then that means you can show them how Periscope works and what
they’re missing out on – the ability to interact with you live. This also means you can
share your videos over your blog. And at the very least, it will allow you to get more
value for money from your content creation.
Most important of all though at this stage is just to go on the platform regularly. Every
time you start recording you’ll find you get a few followers so just doing great stuff

and you’ll very quickly gain traction. If you don’t have lots of time to spend on high
quality footage then consider creating some ‘incidental’ footage – in other words,
record yourself going about things that you normally do anyway such as filming a
workout or filming your small business in action. This way, you can create tons of
interesting content and give people more and more opportunity to start following.
